What historical events are happening in other parts of the country during the time Maude and Sallie are riding west? To find out, you might google one of these subjects:
- Robert E. Lee dies, 1870.
- "Fifteenth Amendment" 1870.
- Women vote, Wyoming, 1870
Write a short newspaper article telling us about one of these--newspaper reports
tell who, what, when, and where.
Some of the history being written in 1870 was about sports and entertainment. Look these up:
- "Parlor skates" (and "William H. Fuller").
- The "boardwalk in Atlantic City, N. J." 1870.
- "Heel and toe races" (and "Gilmore Gardens" in New York City).
- The "curve ball" (and "Fred Goldsmith").
- The "patent for celluloid" (and "John W. Hyatt, Jr.")
Write a short newspaper article telling us about one of these--newspaper reports tell who, what, when, and where.
Why is trouble Maude's middle name?
If Maude were telling the story instead of Sallie, how would she have explained three jailbreaks?
There's a surprise historical figure in this story, identified by a nickname. Can you figure out who he was and find out a little more about him? (you can look him up--nickname + last name--at www.historynet.com but once you know who he is, you'll find a lot has been written about him) The writing assignment is to identify him and tell three things about him. Any
three things.
Extra Credit
Choose one character from the book, other than Sallie, and write about one day in this characterÕs life as if they were telling about it.
