Casey, 12, comes home from school to her New York City apartment and finds that her stepmother, Sylvia, is gone and Casey is alone.
Say Yes is the story of a twelve-year-old girl who comes home from school to find that her stepmother is gone. Rather than drawing clear lines between villains and heroes, Couloumbis reveals the effect of fear and desperation on the choices her characters make.
Abandoned by her stepmother, Casey goes to school as usual, comes home as usual, telling no one. But the superintendent's foster son, Paulie, witnessed Sylvia's departure and recruits Casey as a partner in crime. Sylvia's mother, carrying her Lord & Taylor shopping bags, turns up in time to save both Casey and Paulie from the abusive super and the law, and to help heal the rift between Casey and the warm-hearted and loving, if also weak and needy, Sylvia.
