Over the course of a single day, Willa Jo mulls over the events of the past few weeks. The tale chronicles the changes in the other characters as effectively as the changes in Willa Jo.
Getting Near to Baby is the story of two elder sisters, twelve-year-old Willa Jo and her overbearing Aunt Patty, learning to balance family responsibilities with tolerance and compassion in the face of a family tragedy, while delivering a healthy dose of laughter for the reader.
Willa Jo Dean crawls onto the roof while staying with Aunt Patty, followed by Little Sister, and when discovered, they refuse to come down. From sunrise to sunset of one day, alternating between misguided Aunt Patty's efforts to bring the girls down and recalling the unfortunate event that caused them to be there, we follow a likable and realistic cast of characters.
